If you are looking for a kid friendly hike into the Superstition Mountains then Hieroglyphic Trail is a must. There are two trails in the area, the Hieroglyphic Trail and Lost Goldmine Trail.
We did the Hieroglyphic Trail with these 5 kiddos plus a baby strapped to us so that lets you know how easy it was. It is a lot of walking but it doesn’t get rocky until the very end at which point they are big enough rocks it’s easy to keep the small ones close to you and safe.
The above picture is what the trail looks like majority of the time. Pretty even and very open on either side. While hiking in March there was a pretty consistent stream of people passing but it didn’t feel over crowded. A couple passing us at one point let us know they had seen a rattle snack just off the path a little way ahead of us (behind them) and pointed out where they had seen it. By the time we got up there it had already slithered away but it was a good reminder to always be aware of the potential for snakes when hiking in the desert 🐍
Luckily the rattle snake alert didn’t stop us from enjoying the hikes. It is about a 1.5 miles one way so for our little kids we still took occasional water breaks to let the kids rest their little legs
The desert really does have it’s own kind of beauty. I love it!
I’m known for tripping on hikes but in day to day life, I’m not that clumsy of a person, it’s just that I can’t stop looking around at the beauty when outside that I forget to look where I’m going. I loved the views on this hike.
Once you have reached the rocks you are at the end of the trail and the real fun begins. The kids loved climbing around the rocks. Unfortunately I didn’t get as many pictures here as I would have liked but there are a couple small pools of water leading to this waterfall and one last pool below. You see the hieroglyphics all over the rocks. I mean, the hike is called HIEROGLYPHIC TRAIL and I didn’t get ONE picture of the hieroglyphics! 🤦🏼♀️ In my defense I was nursing the baby majority of the time we were in this area. You’ll just have to take our word for it until you go yourself, it’s really cool!
