As a California native, I spent a few summers visiting cousins in Mesa, Arizona. These summers were filled with scorpion hunting, swimming, and doing anything we could to keep cool. I love my family, but these trip solidified my decision to never live in this scorched part of the world. Fast forward to when my husband and I were dating. I told him that I was open to living just about anywhere except Arizona. Yep, I actually said, “I’ll never live in Arizona.” Well apparently God has a sense of humor and He decided to teach me a lesson: never say never.

Now, after 15+ years of life in Arizona, I’ve come to love it here and am proud to call it home. Yes, it’s hot…but for only a few months out of an otherwise incredible climate the rest of the year. The worst times of the year are actually September and October when the rest of the world is posting about pumpkin spice lattes and cute fall outfits and we’re sweating as we Trick-or-Treat in 90 degree weather. Yes, scorpions are the nasty devils I remember them being, but they are very manageable (especially when your boy cousins aren’t taping them to light switches in your house 😵‍💫). And YES, living in Arizona in the summers is about doing what you can to keep cool. Having learned a thing or two the past decade and a half, I thought I’d share what we’ve come to learn are staples to thriving in Arizona summertime.
